    Built with Simplicity in Mind

BACK UP: On the road, insert the digital camera memory card into Photo Safe II and press a single button to directly download all your photos and videos to the Photo Safe II hard drive.

RETRIEVE: When you get home, simply connect Photo Safe II to your computer to retrieve all your saved pictures and videos.

Digital Foci | Photo Safe II

Backs Up Directlyl from CF, SD, SDHC, MS, MS Duo Cards

Photo Safe II easily copies the entire content of your memory card with its convenient one-touch “Auto Copy” button, which features copy speeds of up to 5.0MB/sec, so a full 1GB card can be copied in approximately 3.5 minutes. Photo Safe II directly works with all popular card formats, including CF (Extreme III, IV, UDMA), SD card, SDHC Card, Memory Stick, MS PRO, MS Duo, and MS PRO Duo. You can also make copies of photos taken from a friend’s cameras by inserting their card into Photo Safe II for instant archival of special moments. Note: SDXC card is not supported.

Copies All Formats with Copy Status Indicators

Photo Safe II copies all file formats (including RAW images and videos), in their original file name and file structure. While you cannot view the pictures or videos on the screen, you can access the original files you copied onto Photo Safe II by connected it to a computer. Its icon backlit LED screen shows key system information, including operational status, battery life, remaining hard drive space, and active partition. Copy status indicator displays percentage completed during copy; copy confirmation; and number of files copied upon completion. A unique folder name that indicates media card type and copy sequence is automatically created for each copy task to help you keep organized.

    User-removable and Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery

Digital Foci | Photo Safe II removable-batteryPhoto Safe II's battery life is approximately 60 minutes (copies a 1GB card 16 times on a full charge). The battery compartment is easy to access when you need to remove and replace the Li-Ion battery. You can recharge the Li-Ion battery by connecting Photo Safe II to the included external AC power adapter, or to the computer USB port. There is also a car adapter available separately, if you want to recharge the battery in your vehicle.

If you are looking to extend the battery power of Photo Safe II without access to wall outlet, take a look at Battery Porter 12000Battery Porter 8000, or Battery Porter 5200, which are external battery packs that provide additional power to the Photo Safe II. If you are looking for a device to recharge the Photo Safe II battery outside the device, take a look at the Universal Battery Charger

Access Your Backups on the Computer

Photo Safe II is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS with no driver required. Simply connect Photo Safe II to your computer through USB connection to access your saved photos and videos. Each backup created will be in a separate folder, with the folder names made up of 2 pieces of information. The first two characters are letters that indicate the type of memory card copied. The next 5 characters are sequential numbers starting from '00001' that that indicate the order of the folder created for the specific card format copied. For example, a folder name 'SD00003' means that this is a backup from a SD card, and this is the 3rd folder created for the SD card format.

Doubles as a External Hard Drive

When the Photo Safe II connected to the computer, the computer will recognize it as an USB Mass Storage Device. The computer will map the hard drive and allow you to access it just like any other storage device on your computer. With its 320GB or 500GB capacity, you can use Photo Safe II like an external hard drive. It also functions as a memory card reader on Windows systems.

Please note that if you ever need to reformat the Photo Safe hard drive, it needs to be formatted in FAT32 format (in Windows) or MS-DOS format (in Mac) for the card copy function to work. When the Photo Safe hard drive is formatted in a file format other than FAT32, it will work as an external hard drive when connected to your computer, but the stand-alone card copying feature will not work.

    Supports Multiple Hard Drive Partitions

One advanced feature on Photo Safe II is that you can create multiple partitions, meaning dividing the Photo Safe II hard disk drive into multiple drives, and select which partition to copy to when you perform a card copy. This feature is useful if you want to back up different sets of photos, such as from a different photo shoot, or from a different camera, into separate drives. Some customers also find it useful to create 2 separate partitions on Photo Safe II: use one as the portable storage device for backing up from memory cards, and the other as an external hard drive for backing up files from the computer.

Copy Directly to CF Card from SD, SDHC, MS or MS Duo Card

You can also use Photo Safe II to copy card content from a SD, SDHC, Memory Stick, MS PRO Duo, or MS Duo card directly onto a CF card. You might find this feature useful when you want to make an additional backup from a SD or MS card to a CF card, or when you want to make a copy of the photos from or to a friend's memory card.

  • Editorial Reviews

    • TidBITS.comTidBITS logo "The Photo Safe II is a lightweight (0.6 lb/272 g) portable photo storage device and memory card reader, and it proved a welcome traveling companion. With it, I was able to back up all our photos and videos as the trip progressed, copying them from our camera's memory card every few days. I even had enough storage space to back up all the photos taken by the relatives who were traveling with us."

    • Gadling.comgadling logo "When the Photo Safe II starts a copying process, it will copy everything it finds on the memory card onto the hard drive; this includes video files, images in any format (including RAW) and anything else you copied onto the card. The copy also preserves the directory structure of the photos as well as any information (EXIF data) stored within the images.

One slightly more advanced feature of the Photo Safe II is the ability to split the internal drive into multiple partitions. You can then select the active partition using the buttons on the device. This feature allows you to physically split where you save your photos, and could come in handy if more than one person is using the drive, or if you plan to store photos as well as other files."

    Customer Reviews

    • "I was in the market for a portable digital storage device for transferring my images to during extended photographic field work in wilderness and other extremely remote locations. Although there are many to choose from all were large and bulky, albeit with some very nice features. I really needed something small, compact, lightweight, and easy to use. My local professional camera technicians suggested trying Digital Foci's Photo Safe device. I ordered a 120 GB Photo Safe and unfortunately, the battery was defective. Oh no, PANIC! I sent an email right away to Digital Foci's customer support wherein I explained my dilemma and expected to receive the typical mumbo jumbo that I usually get from various companies. Thankfully (and I mean extremely thankfully) I received a reply the next morning. Understanding my impending departure they immediately set in motion sending me a new (and fully tested) device while I returned to them the one I had. (Pretty darn trusting if you ask me.) The new device arrived in a few days […and] worked perfectly.

During my expedition I loaded up many cards with ease and even faster than the documentation stipulated. I was able to consistently copy a fully loaded 8 gig Extreme IV card in just 23 minutes using the Photo Safe in battery mode. All files always successfully copied and displayed as documented in the user guide. Once I arrived at home, all the images were there and easily, quickly loaded to my computer. It really couldn't be simpler. Next month I head to Europe for three weeks and will probably nearly fill the device, and you can bet I'll be singing its praises all the way there and back!

Although the original device had a problem I recognize that sometimes that can happen. What impressed me the most (and I'm still amazed and thankful to Digital Foci) was their quick reply, personal touch, quick to offer a great solution, and standing by their product. In today's world it’s really rare to find a company that truly is CUSTOMER FOCUSED. Many claim it, and many more say they have earned prestigious recognition for it but few of their customers would agree. Digital Foci is one that deserves these sorts of awards and accolades!"

    • "A company named Digital Foci, has come to my rescue with a product they call ‘Photo Safe’. The SD memory card in the camera has definite limits. Purchasing many more cards and keeping track of them is not an acceptable option. When I saw the write-up about this device in a magazine, I nearly fainted – a single purpose device! It’s a very small hard dive that runs on an internal battery, has slots for most kinds of popular camera memory cards and has only two buttons!! Perfect for storing pictures until I get home….

The operation is simplicity itself. Hold down the Power button for three seconds to fire it up. Plug in the picture card and press the Enter button. The Safe automatically offloads everything on the card with a running display of the percent completion. When I get home I plug it into a USB port and it lights up without any button pushing. It receives sufficient power from the USB port and does not rely on its internal battery….

Bottom line: I love it! It solved my problem for taking too many pictures on a trip and it solves it simply. I cannot overemphasize how important “simply” is."

    • "When traveling, I used to kluge together an [...brand of hard drive based music player...] and an after-market card reader to attempt to backup my memory cards. Usually, the [...device...] would run out of power before one card could finish loading, so I had to only partially fill my cards in order to be able to back them up onto my [..device...].

I wanted a device that did only one thing -- back up my cards -- and not surf the web, play miniature videos, etc. I read about Photo Safe and ordered one before I left on a recent trip. On the trip I fried a CF card containing photos while using the old kluged system. My Photo Safe was waiting for me when I returned home. As a test, I loaded 3 SD cards and a CF card into my Photo Safe before I even looked at their contents. The memory cards loaded onto the Photo Safe with 2 button presses (counting the "Power" button). I checked the number of files (NEF, RAW, JPG, and AVI) on the cards and on the Photo Safe. They were the same. Loading the files onto my computer was just as easy. My computer recognized the Photo Safe as another hard drive so I could just copy the data to my computer's hard drive using one "copy" command. Photo Safe kept each card's data in its own subdirectory so this created matching subdirectories on my computer. This occurred quickly, much more quickly than reading a card into my computer using a card reader.

I didn't expect the Photo Safe to handle a new 4 GB SDHC card since in the past I had to use special software to read it. The Photo Safe read it as easily as it read my 1 and 2 GB cards -- and it transferred the data to my computer as easily. I am VERY pleased with my purchase and Digital Foci's fast service. Download the PDF documentation and see that the device has no "surprises." It works just as advertised and it works quickly."
